Ernie's 36km run for Stroke Awareness

My husband, Ernie, had a stroke nearly 4 years ago at the age of 33. At the time our son was 3 months old and our daughter 2 1/2 years old. It was less than a week after our 9th anniversary.

The reasons for the stroke are unknown. Ernie ate very healthy foods, didn't smoke or drink and was physically in great shape.

He is now permanently disabled due to stroke symptoms such as stress management, mood management and memory problems. As a result of the stroke, he also has balance issues at times that affect his ability to walk and has had seizures which are now under the control of medication.

On the 26th of June, Ernie set out to run 32km/19.9 miles to promote stroke awareness as well as to bring hope and encouragement to those affected by strokes. A wrong turn meant he ran 36km/22.4 miles instead of the planned 32km!!!

We invited friends and neighbours -- some who came to see him off at the start of the run and others who waited at the "finish line" for more than an hour for him to arrive. When Ernie finally arrived he mistakenly came from the opposite direction than he'd planned so we were all staring in the wrong direction! Thankfully I got a glimpse of him when he was about 15 feet away or we would have missed his arrival!

Personally I only run as far as it takes me to catch the kids so this is pretty impressive as far as I'm concerned! I'm super proud of him...

BWM, "squeeze in a 5K"... To me that's a lot! Nevermind your recent jog to the grocery store -- even that's too much for me!
