"Before the Wrath" Movie Giveaway

"Before the Wrath" is a docudrama style movie that addresses the much debated theme of the Rapture in a way that is encouraging and uplifting.

"Before the Wrath" is available in a variety of formats including: Blu-ray, DVD, and digital. It has been the #1-selling documentary DVD on Amazon for three straight months!

But concerning the times and the seasons,
brethren, you have no need that I should write to you.
For you yourselves know perfectly
that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

Kevin Sorbo, from "Soul Surfer", "God's Not Dead", and "Hercules", narrates this docudrama and is joined by an amazing group of theological experts including: Jack Hibbs, Amir Tsarfati, Jan Markell, and JD Farag.

My husband and I had the opportunity to view this movie and found it to be very hopeful. In hindsight we could have had our sensitive teens watch it too. The experts mentioned above are ones that my husband and I have watched in the past and have found to be reputable so it was great to see them share their insight in this movie.

Although many people debate the timing, and some even the likelihood, of the Rapture, this movie reveals the importance of knowing what Jesus, Himself, taught about the Rapture. This movie is full of hope for believers and serves as a reminder to share the gospel with others in preparation for Jesus' return.
Check out the trailer for "Before the Wrath" and share it with others! This message is so needed and relevant during these times of uncertainty and stress.

Themes in "Before the Wrath" include: prophecy, faith, and salvation.

"Before the Wrath" is recommended for fans of Bible stories and documentaries such as "Is Genesis History?", "Patterns of Evidence: Exodus", and "Finding Noah". Really anyone who's curious to learn more about the Rapture should see this movie regardless of what they believe.

"The Lego Movie 2" -- Not Awesome

*This post is by 13 year old guest blogger, Elijah, who felt so strongly about this issue that he asked to write a review.*

Character Development in The Lego Movie & The Lego Movie 2 Contradict Each Other

A lot of people would agree that the Lego Movie was a huge hit at the box office, selling over 630,916,045 Canadian dollars. Since the Lego Movie was such a hit, Warner Bros. made a sequel titled “The Lego Movie 2” selling 257,019,945 Canadian dollars. In my opinion The Lego Movie 2 is just a large cash grab with poorly strung out ideas that contradict the first film. The main problems are the characters, storyline, and the morals, In this article i will focus on the characters and explain how The Lego Movie and The Lego Movie 2 contradict each other.

~-=EMMETT=-~

Emmett (as portrayed by The Lego Movie) is a bit of a goofball, constantly making pathetic creations and having bad ideas. Later on in the movie Emmett becomes a “master builder” and learns to just be himself, but Lego Movie 2 sings a totally different song. In The Lego Movie 2, despite the apocalyptic surrounding, Emmet is still happy and Lucy tells him that he needs to stop pretending everything is awesome. Emmett spends the rest of the movie trying to be someone he's not.

~-=LUCY=-~

In the first film Wildstyle is depicted to be insecure and tries to be dark and brooding but later learns from Emmet to just be herself, revealing her name to be Lucy. But apparently according to Lego Movie 2 she still wasn't being herself! Lucy apparently has the same personality as Emmet! Why wouldn't Lucy tell Emmet at the end of the first Lego Movie!?

~=PRESIDENT BUSINESS=~

In the Lego Movie, Fin's dad is represented by President Business and at the end of the movie he says that Fin's sister can come down into the basement and play with them, leading viewers to believe that the dad would play, build, and spend more time with his kids. In The Lego Movie 2 they threw that idea out the window and made Fin's dad an absent parent. President Business only appears in the first 2 minutes of the movie before he leaves to play golf. This means that the second that Fin and his little sister started fighting (and destroying Bricksburg) the dad left.

~=BATMAN=~

Batman is obviously a loner, but The Lego Movie 2 makes Batman marry someone -- a pile of bricks of all things. This just goes against everything Batman is. He's heartless, he's careless, and he's bachelor.

In closing, The Lego Movie contained a lot of good character development and The Lego Movie 2 ruined it. The show just exists to suck more money out of a beloved franchise. Characters, storyline, and the morals, are all contradictory to the first film.

"Breakthrough" Movie

"Breakthrough" tells the inspirational true story of a mother's love and the power of prayer. This movie is opening in theaters April 17, 2019 -- just in time for Easter!

When Joyce Smith's son, John, fell through the ice on a Missouri lake their world was forever changed. "Breakthrough" is "an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle."

My husband and I were blessed to have a preview of the movie "Breakthrough". We were impressed by the strong acting and the fact that the "characters" were written as real people with flaws. The movie is sure to tug at your heart strings.

If you're a fan of "This is Us" and Chrissy Metz (who plays Kate Pearson) -- you'll be so glad to see her in this role as a mom with strong faith. Chrissy Metz is quoted as saying “I've had some hardships myself, obviously, not to this degree but things that were really trying. And the only thing that sort of kept me going was my faith.” (The Christian Post)

"Breakthrough" is an amazing tribute to the power of prayer and the importance of faith. This movie is sure to inspire and encourage you!

Little Women Review

I can now share my thoughts with you after having pre-screened the movie "Little Women" -- a modern retelling of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel. Movie theaters will be bustling with imagination, dreams, and love on Friday, September 28, 2018.

My husband; Desiree (14); Elijah (12); and I really enjoyed the movie "Little Women". Desiree read "Little Women" last year, but we didn't realize the gigantic novel we had was only Part 1. Many things in the movie came as a surprise to her having only read the first part of the novel. She was quite insistent about Jo's love life going in a certain direction. (No spoilers here!)

"We all have our own life to pursue,
our own kind of dream to be weaving..."
Louisa May Alcott

With such diverse personalities, there's sure to be a character you can relate to. In this modern version, Jo seems more feisty than in the 90s movie. She has a tendency to act out physically and then regret her actions soon after. For some viewers, that might make it harder to love her, but other viewers are likely to relate to her more as an imperfect, complicated person.

This movie, set in the present day, stays fairly true to the original story. Slight alterations didn't change the overall feel of the movie. The biggest difference is the modern day party in place of the formal dance. While I don't love teen drinking depicted in movies, I see it as an opportunity for my kids to learn from the mistakes of others.

Lea Thompson, from "Back to the Future" and "Switched at Birth" fame, plays such a sweet and encouraging mom. Marmee is able to encourage her daughters to follow their dreams while embracing their unique personalities. All the acting was superb, although at times it was hard to think of the sisters as teenagers when they are played by the same actors in the past and present day scenes.

One of the takeaway messages of the movie is that we each have our own dreams to pursue and that the pursuit of a dream isn't always an easy journey. If you're looking for a heart warming movie, check out "Little Women" on September 28, 2018.

Little Women: A Modern Retelling -- Movie Giveaway!

In honour of the 150th anniversary of Louisa May Alcott's novel, "Little Women"will be hitting theaters on Friday, September 28, 2018! "Little Women" is a warm-hearted, modern retelling of the beloved novel.

"Love is the only thing that we can carry with us when we go,
and it makes the end so easy."
Louisa May Alcott

The classic story is being brought to the screen with a present day twist. Lea Thompson and Lucas Grabeel (both from "Switched at Birth") are starring in this movie as Marmee and Laurie.

I was nervous about a modern retelling of the classic novel, but after watching the trailer I am excited to see it. I've always thought that the 1994 movie of "Little Women" was so well done that it couldn't possibly be improved upon. That being said, I think this version will be enough of a change with its modern day setting that I hope it will be a hit as well.

"Little Women" is in theaters September 28, 2018 and looks to be a great movie. Keep in mind the rating is PG 13 (for thematic elements and teen drinking).

Although I haven't seen the movie yet, I expect that the themes of family, love, and following your dreams will come shining through. I am looking forward to seeing this movie with my daughter, but I bet it will be one my son and husband will want to see too.

"Paul, Apostle of Christ" Movie Giveaway

"Paul, Apostle of Christ" is a movie that tells the Biblical story of the life of Paul. Releasing nationwide on Friday, March 23, "Paul, Apostle of Christ" is a faith filled movie that is recommended for ages 13 and up.

Jim Caviezel ("Passion of the Christ" and "Person of Interest") and James Faulkner ("Downton Abbey") lead the cast in this movie. While I don't know James Faulkner very well, I have always enjoyed Jim Caviezel's performances -- especially in the science fiction movie "Frequency".

The plot: Paul is imprisoned in Rome by Emperor Nero and sentenced to death. Luke, his devoted friend, hopes to write a book that details Paul's tumultuous journeys and the message of Jesus Christ.

Although I haven't yet seen the movie myself, it looks like it will tell a powerful story of redemption, mercy and grace. Paul's imprisonment always serves to remind us to persevere in the midst of persecution -- a theme that is increasingly necessary in the world at large.

Of course this movie will have some fictional aspects to flesh it out into a movie length, but thankfully, the makers of the movie have strived to tell a story that honours the Biblical account. Check out the following video for a discussion of Biblical accuracy in the movie:

The story of Saul-turned-Paul is such an amazing example of the transformational work of Jesus Christ. When we consider that Paul could go from a man who hated and killed Christians to the writer of many New Testament books, this should give us pause. Surely God can forgive sinners such as us, if he forgave Paul his past sins. What a blessing to know that God's grace and mercy are for us all.

"Paul, Apostle of Christ" is in theaters March 23 and will be a great movie to watch in the weeks building up to Easter.

Letters from Paul videos are narrated readings of Scriptures by James Faulkner, the actor who depicts Paul in the movie.

"Wonder" the Movie

My family and I recently watched the movie "Wonder" and were blown away by this great family friendly movie with a message for everyone: choose kind.

My kids (11 and 14) had never read the book (despite my offering) and so they went into watching the movie with very little information. In fact, my husband and I were pre-screening it to see if it would be okay for them to watch, when they spontaneously came into the family room and joined us moments after it started.

I read the book "Wonder" a couple of years ago and so I was interested to see what the movie would be like. This movie has excellent acting by a great cast. I love the imaginative spin they had throughout the movie (reminiscent of "Ramona and Beezus"). Like the book, the movie focuses on the point of view of various characters and tells a story beyond what you might think at 'face value'.

If you're looking for a great movie for your family to watch together, consider this one.

If you're wondering if it's right for your kids --  check out the Wonder review on Kids in Mind for specifics (and some mild spoilers).

"When Calls the Heart" Season 3

When Calls the Heart is a rare gem of quality family entertainment.

When Calls the Heart is produced by Michael Landon Jr. and based on the book series by Christian author, Janette Oke. This series is set in the early 1900s in western Canada and features enduring characters and rich storylines.

Season 3 brings the storyline back to the coal mining town and focuses less on the big city of Hamilton. Fans of the show were glad to see a return to the small town simplicity of season 1. The mystery continues from season 2, as do rivalries between key characters. New mysteries and new characters are also introduced in season 3 (including one character played by Brooke Shields).

Season 3 starts off with a special New Year's Eve episode that I can see becoming a lovely tradition for our family to watch each year! This episode shows how the residents of this small town in western Canada celebrate New Year's Eve and anticipate all that the future has in store for them. I'm being intentionally vague so as not to give spoilers, but there might be a New Year's Eve kiss by a couple of lovebirds.

This boxset contains both When Calls the Heart episodes as they aired on the Hallmark channel as well as movie length versions of the episodes so you can choose how you would like to view them. You can even keep one set of DVDs for yourself and give the other set of DVDs to a friend -- although you'll have to decide who gets to keep the case.

My family continues to rely on When Calls the Heart for quality entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. We typically watch an episode on a Sunday night with a bowl of popcorn and cuddles on the couch. So few shows these days are appropriate for young viewers and also enjoyable for adults. This show meets both requirements with flying colours!

Check out: Fish Flix for When Calls the Heart DVDs as well as other Christian Movies that your family is sure to enjoy!

Buy It: When Calls the Heart Season 3
For those who act quickly -- there is a SALE on When Calls the Heart DVDs and even a When Calls the Heart Season 1-3 Combo Deal !!!

Also, for those Hearties who love to colour, there is a When Calls the Heart Colouring Book ! How fun would that be?!

Disclosure: I received the above mentioned product for free in exchange for an honest review on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe would be good for my readers.

Hidden Figures

My family and I recently went to see "Hidden Figures" which is based on the untold true story of three women who overcame racial and gender barriers at NASA.

Elijah (10) said when we left the theater:
"That was a movie I could really relate to!"  :)

When I asked him what he found he could relate to most about the movie he said he liked how the women stood up for what they believed in.  What a great source of inspiration this should be for all of us -- to stand up for what's right and make a difference in our world.

Check out History vs Hollywood (after you've seen the movie of course!) for a comparison of the movie and real life.  Katherine Johnson -- the main character in the movie -- is currently 98 years old and says of the movie: "It sounded good...  It sounded very, very accurate."

"Patterns of Evidence: Exodus" DVD Giveaway

Is the Israelite's Exodus from Egypt a true story or is it a myth?  Filmmaker Timothy Mahoney strives to answer that question while examining archaeological and historical evidence in his new documentary "Patterns of Evidence: Exodus".

This documentary took Timothy Mahoney 12 years to make and involved his traveling from Israel to Egypt to the Netherlands.  "Patterns of Evidence: Exodus" examines Biblical texts and archaeological artifacts and contains interviews with leading experts -- both those who are for and against the authenticity of the Bible's Exodus.

It was interesting to see the historical timeline presented visually in this documentary.  "Patterns of Evidence: Exodus" considers that the artifacts that prove the Biblical account to be true may be "missing" because people have been looking for the Exodus at the wrong time in history.  Shifting the timeline back 250 - 400 years means that events in the Bible, including the Exodus, begin to line up with archaeological and historical evidence.

Is it enough to consider the Exodus to be a moral fable or does it matter to you if the Exodus story is true?  "Patterns of Evidence: Exodus" is a great documentary for those that question the validity of the Scriptures and for those who want to critically think about what they believe.

My husband, 9 year old and 11 year old were intrigued by this documentary (though admittedly my kids only watched the first half hour).  I trust that you and your family will enjoy it and be challenged by it too.

Kirk Cameron's "Unstoppable" - Giveaway

Kirk Cameron's DVD Unstoppable is a newly released DVD that discusses the question "Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering?"

The DVD begins with Kirk telling the story of a 15 year old family friend who passed away recently.  Then Kirk talks about mankind's first experiences with sin and suffering.  Stories from the Bible that are touched on include: creation, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, the flood, the tower of Babel and Abraham.

What I liked least about the movie is the artistic license that was taken with the story of Adam and Eve.  First, the graphic image of the rib being removed from Adam was over the top in my opinion.  Second, the serpent was depicted as a man with a skin condition.  And third, when Adam and Eve are hiding from God, Adam turns and growls -- presumably at God who is about to find him.

I always thought that God supernaturally removed Adam's rib with no surgery required and no blood as a byproduct (this was pre-fall after all).  I always pictured the serpent as... well... a serpent (but with legs).  And my understanding is that Adam was afraid and ashamed -- not angry.  These three issues alone are enough that I would not want to show this movie to my children or to unsaved friends of family.

There are some music choices (heavy metal/dissonant style) that I didn't love, but I'm sure someone else may think they're great.

What I liked most of all is the metaphor of the rainbow as a bow (a weapon) in the sky.  Kirk was suggesting that the bow points up into the sky referring to the day on the cross when God's judgement and wrath would come to Him instead of to mankind.

Another thought provoking part of the DVD is God's promise to Adam and Eve that one of Eve's descendants would crush the serpent's head and how this was fulfilled in Christ's death and resurrection.  Jesus was able to protect His bride (the church) in a way that Adam hadn't.

The song "The Time is Now" by Warren Barfield was a highlight of the DVD.  And, of course, the moral of the DVD is something that I agree with -- God continually demonstrates his love and mercy for mankind.
I'm not sure who the intended audience is for the DVD, but I would suggest it only for adult Christians who are firm enough in their faith that they can overlook the artistic licenses taken.

Books I've Read in 2012

I love reading books meant for all ages.  Any book with stars by it is one I'd consider reading again in the future (or would consider having my kids read in the future) so presumably you (or your kids) might like it too.  If you've read (or wondered about) any of these books feel free to comment -- I'd love to chat with you...  Oh and if you love a book I don't (or vice versa), we can still be friends.

***A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park***
This is based on the true story of one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan.  One of the stories takes place in 1985 and another in 2008.  Themes include survival and making a difference in the world.  Aimed at pre-teens/teens -- some violence.

Wonderstruck, Brian Selznick
I read this book and then Desiree (9) read it after me.  There are two stories that take place 50 years apart in this book -- one told through pictures and one through words.  Aimed at pre-teens.

The Sins of the Father, Jeffrey Archer
This novel is the second in a series and is set during the 1940's.  Themes include mistaken identity, war, family secrets and forbidden love.  Some language.

Odd Man Out, Sarah Ellis
12 year old Kip spends the summer with his grandma and 5 girl cousins while his mom and step dad are on their honeymoon.  Themes include family secrets, finding out who you are and accepting others for who they are.  Aimed at pre-teens.

Harriet Spies Again, Helen Ericson
Harriet meets an interesting neighbour and tries to figure out the mystery in her nanny's life.  Harriet is not as quirky and complex as in the original book (and the same goes for Ole Golly) so fans may be disappointed.  Aimed at pre-teens.

Harriet the Spy, Louise Fitzhugh
I thought this book was awesome when I was young, but re-reading it now made me realize I don't want my 9 year old to read it just yet.  Harriet spies on her neighbours and friends and says things you would be ashamed to admit to thinking.  Aimed at pre-teens.

Catching Fire and Mocking Jay, Suzanne Collins
I have heard some say that the books are thought provoking, but there were opportunities for Katniss to be reflective that were overlooked by the author -- especially in book three.  In my opinion it's mindless violence with minor ethics (that are barely addressed in the novels themselves).  Aimed at pre-teens and teens.

***You are Not So Smart, David McRaney***
This book is about "all the wonderful ways you delude yourself every day".  Procrastination, the need for order in a chaotic world and sticking to first impressions are all topics discussed.  Experiments are used to highlight how unaware and irrational we really are.

The Last Sin Eater, Francine Rivers
Set in the Appalachian mountains in the 1850's, this novel is about the Welsh immigrants and their tradition of having a sin eater to rid them of their sins when they die.  10 year old Cadi seeks redemption and ultimately uncovers the dark secrets her community has kept hidden for decades.

Margit: Books 1-4  Our Canadian Girl, Kathy Kacer
These books tell the story of a young girl during the 1940s and how her family adapts to life in Canada after immigrating during the war.  Aimed at pre-teens.

Cutting for Stone, Abraham Verghese
Set in Ethiopia, this novel focuses on themes such as betrayal, healing and love and the significant effect our choices have on others and on our future.  I found this novel difficult to get into, but it was more manageable after the first couple chapters.  R rated.

The Vow, Kim & Krickitt Carpenter with Dana Wilkerson
This book tells of the true events that inspired the movie "The Vow".  Shortly after their marriage, Kim and Krickitt were in a car accident that left Krickitt with no memory of the man she loved so much.  Themes include faith in God in the midst of trials and unconditional love.  (I recommend you read the book and skip the movie).

The Winter Garden, Kristin Hannah
This novel tells the story of two sisters and their emotionally absent mom.  Themes include family relationships, secrets and war-torn Leningrad.  I like stories that unfold naturally more than ones that hint of a revealing to come.

***The Soldier's Wife, Margaret Leroy***
Set in Guernsey during World War II, this book tells the story of a woman who cares for her daughters and her mother in law while her husband is away at war.  The Occupation affects the whole family in different ways.  Themes include love and the dilemmas of war.  Some language.

A Stolen Life: A Memoir, Jaycee Dugard
After reading Room, I found this book about Jaycee Dugard's real life kidnapping.  There is some R rated language and mature content introduced in the second chapter, but the rest of the book is not as descriptive.  Jaycee has an amazing outlook on life despite all she and her daughters have been through.

Unshackled, Pastor Larry DeBruyn
This book Biblically refutes William P. Young's The Shack which has gained popularity among Christians and non-Christians alike.  Topics such as polytheism, heresy and the "Emerging church" are addressed.  An article at Insight for Living also highlights a lot of my concerns with the book The Shack.

The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
I wanted to give this book a go seeing as it's been approved as appropriate literature for my school district (not sure what grade level though).  I thought the premise was interesting, but didn't care for the mid third of the book and I hope my kiddos aren't required to read it any time in the near future...

What Alice Forgot, Liane Moriarty
39 year old Alice loses 10 years of her life after a bump on the head and finds that life is very different for her '29' year old self.  Themes including sibling relationships, marital relationships, amnesia and infertility.

Penelope: Books 1-3  Our Canadian Girl, Sharon McKay
Set in Halifax in 1917, these books tell the story of the Halifax explosion and how life changes for Penelope, her dad and her sisters afterwards.  Aimed at pre-teens

Mandie and the Mysterious Bells, Lois Gladys Leppard
Another Mandie series book aimed at pre-teens.

The Best of Me, Nicholas Sparks
I gotta say, in my opinion, this isn't the best of Nicholas Sparks.  I noticed a lot of "Not that blah blah blah" sentences and it started to irk me.  Two highschool students who were in love reunite 25 years later after the death of a friend.  I found the novel too predictable to be enjoyable...

"Theo" DVD

"Theo" is an animated DVD that teaches the basics of the Christian faith.  The series has a Grandfatherly narrator named Theo and two adorable mice named Luther and Belfry (who are reminiscent of Cinderella's little friends).  The quality of animation is good and the show has a great balance between the funny antics of the two little mice and the Biblical messages.

At the start of each show Theo is singing a hymn.  I love that these hymns are being incorporated into this series for young children because it is introducing them to beautiful songs they may not have heard before.

Biblical concepts such as sin, salvation and faith are taught through the series.  The shows aren't very long (5-9 minutes each), but because the message is so powerful there is plenty to reflect on.  This is a great way to springboard a discussion with your children.

My main wish for "Theo" is that when a Bible verse is quoted, the reference would be stated along with it -- ie: "The Bible says in Romans 3:23...".  Having references reinforced in the dvd series would be helpful for memorization purposes and would also allow people to look up the Scriptures afterwards to read further.

Desiree (7) said that her favourite part is when the two mice, Luther and Belfry, try to reach the cookies with a hot air balloon.

Elijah (5) said his favourite part is when Theo sings.

The "Theo" website is full of resources.  There is a Parent Guide that helps parents (or even Sunday School teachers) reinforce the concepts discussed in the episodes.  These guides "will recap the Q & A, the Bible Verse, the Bible Story, and present lively ways you can reinforce Bible truths and review teachings at home."  Colouring Pages are available online of Theo, Luther and Belfry.  "Theo" Church Curriculum is also available to purchase.

The Buy 1 - Give 1 Campaign is an amazing program -- for every "Theo: God's Love" dvd purchased, Whitestone Media and Child Evangelism Fellowship will give a child in need their very own copy of "Theo".  You can even select the region of the world where you would like the additional copy to be sent to!  What a great way to share the gospel with your own children as well as with others!
